Do we understand how flafy did the blur in the 1st and 2nd ricing competition? (displayed in the hall of fame). That one looks different than anything i could achieve with the options from the blur options in hyprland.conf (could be a skill issue tho).
Is that may be because of the wallpaper?? I can’t seem to figure out why this feels unique. Would really appreciate some info on this.
Could not attach the image(wasn’t loading somehow…)

also does blur actually hit performance? haven’t noticed it yet on my machine but its not a particularly old machine… maybe on old devices? i want to know because i will attempt to setup hyprland on an older laptop soon.
*ps. i hope this is not the wrong way to post on a forum… feels more reddit like post to me, so tell me about that too if its wrong.
Flafy blur looks like passes = 4 and like size = 10

Yes and no. If you are using a static wallpaper:
No real impact on tiled windows
Additional strain on the gpu with floating windows, the more passes / size, the more strain.
If you are using a dynamic wallpaper:
Additional strain on the gpu, the more passes / size, the more strain.
Essentially, the action of “blurring” is relatively expensive. With tiled windows on a static wallpaper, we “pre-blur”, and don’t recalculate it every frame. On changing wallpapers, or floating windows (because they have stuff behind) we have to perform the blur every frame.
I’ve personally noticed blur being a little too much for my notebook, it would always have a little lag on workspace changes and what not, a while ago too though.
You probably do wanna either a dedicated or rather new igpu
I don’t really have performance issues with blur but still prefer to keep it as low as I can before it starts artifacting or looking bad because of battery life
I have figured out that high blur doesn’t feel much in terms of a performance hit but it still uses more than enough cpu to cause a significant battery life hit. I got from 5hrs on a full charge to just 2 hrs. its mostly because my processor is not built for efficiency but still too much.
