Hello. I’ve been using Hyprland for a few months, on FreeBSD, and recently Arch. Loving it! I’d really like to support its development, and Hyprperks looks like a great way to do it. But is it really not available to subscribers in the UK? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Stripe-powered service exclude the UK! Is it a mistake perhaps?
It’s not a mistake, and it’s not due to Stripe. It’s due to UK tax laws.
Interesting @vaxry — would you mind indulging me on why that is please? Maybe I can help resolve the problem…
UK has no VAT-free threshold, which requires instant registration with HMRC. HMRC really didn’t want to register me, and cited various reasons one after another with each one being more ridiculous (firstly a “system glitched”, then I “didn’t send” when I did, etc) so I gave up.
I am not a big company, I am one guy. I won’t be wrangling with HMRC.
I don’t blame you, and I can completely understand that approach. They’re painful to deal with - try living here ![]()
I run a small e-commerce shop, with Stripe as the payment processor, and I thought they had something to simplify dealing with a variety of country taxation systems? Maybe I’ll got RTFM thoroughly and let you know if I find something helpful?
OK, there is a threshold @vaxry — it’s €10,000. See 6.5 here in HMRC official documentation (I found another link, from a third party, announcing the change — but as a new user here Discourse will only allow me a maximum of two links in a post). Edit: Oh, hmm, I think that limit is shared across all EU states ![]()
If you’re likely to be already over that, then I guess it’s a decision over whether you want the additional costs within Stripe. It looks like they have an agreement with Taxually to handle registrations, so you wouldn’t have to deal with HMRC directly (that’s a price worth paying). And it looks like, according the HMRC docs above, you could registered for the ‘OSS’ (link in next post; limits)
I guess it depends on the potential size of your UK user base as to whether it’s worth all the faff* eh?
*very useful British word.
UK is not part of OSS as that is an EU thing. You guys left the EU.
There is no VAT-free threshold for businesses based outside UK.
I am begrudgingly well aware of that @vaxry (remain voter here, thank you).
It looks like the gov documentation is out of date, quel surprise. OSS was still valid all the way up until the end of last year.
Well it’s a shame I can’t support your work! All I can say is dziękuję.
hopefully one day I can sell in the UK one way or another.
Big sad - I’ve been wondering why I’ve not been getting updates. I even called my card company to ask why it kept getting declined ![]()
Fingers crossed it changes at some point ![]()
